SENATOR MARTIN LOONEY

AN ADVOCATE FOR US!

For his entire career in the General Assembly, State Senator Martin Looney has been a champion for effective, responsive, accountable state government and a forceful advocate for enhanced state assistance to communities like New Haven and Hamden. 


Prior to his election to the State Senate in 1992, he served six terms in the State House of Representatives. He was chosen by his Senate colleagues as Senate Majority Leader from 2003 to 2015, and as State Senate President Pro Tempore beginning in 2015. 


After earning his B.A. cum laude in English from Fairfield University, he was awarded a Woodrow Wilson Foundation National Fellowship for Graduate Study. He went on to receive his M.A. in English from the University of Connecticut and his J.D. from the University of Connecticut School of Law. Since 1985, Senator Looney has been engaged in the practice of law and is a partner in the firm of Keyes and Looney.


He has been a practitioner in residence at the University of New Haven’s Department of Public Safety and Criminal Justice since 1998, where he was also the recipient of an honorary Doctor of Laws degree. In addition, he has been an adjunct faculty member in the Political Science Department of Quinnipiac University since 2001 and at the Quinnipiac University School of Law since 2015.
